A Little Card With A Big Impact

Monday, July 26, 2004 - 1:35 PM

In my wallet I carry a small card. Typed on that card are 5 little lines that read:

  • The light of God surrounds me.
  • The love of God enfolds me.
  • The power of God protects me.
  • The presence of God watches over me.
  • Wherever I am, God is!

The idea for that little card did not come from me. I got the idea after reading a small booklet by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. In it, he talked about carrying a little card with those words on it and how much that card and those words changed his life. I decided to give it a try. So, I typed the words out on an index card and put it in my wallet. For a long time, it did absolutely nothing for me. And then I realized I was missing the most important part of carrying that little card. I needed to take it out and read it, really READ it! I needed to let those words sink in, to embed them in my heart and soul. I needed to keep reading them until I absolutely believed every word without even a hint of doubt.

The reading and believing was the hard part. It was a lot easier to leave it in my wallet and hope that it would change my life by osmosis or something. But, I knew it wouldn’t, so I started reading it. At first, I read it only once in a while. I liked it. It made me feel good. So, gradually, I started reading it more often. Soon, I was reading it every day and the words really started to sink in. I started to realize…

  • The light of God really DOES surround me. If I look with my heart, I will see it.
  • The love of God really DOES enfold me. If I open my heart, I will feel it.
  • The power of God really DOES protect me. If I trust it, I will be safe.
  • The presence of God really DOES watch over me. If I believe in it, I never need to worry.
  • Wherever I am, God is! If I listen for Him, He will talk to me.

It isn’t the little card that changed my life. It is being reminded of the love and protection of an Almighty God that has changed my life and it continues to change me every single day.
