An Honest Politician?

Pro-Life Democrat Says He’s a Christian First

In an age where politicians seem to change their values and opinions to fit whatever political agenda they are focused on at the moment, it’s refreshing to see a politician who is willing to stand by his beliefs, even if they disagree with the political party he represents.

Although I wouldn’t technically call myself a Democrat, I tend to lean more towards Democratic candidates in most elections. I’ve often been questioned by well-meaning Christians and non-Christians alike about my choices, especially considering most Democrats support things like gay rights and abortion, clearly un-Biblical and morally charged issues. My answer? It is possible for me to be pro-life AND pro-choice because I believe that everyone has a right to make their own moral choices. The only one they have to answer to for those choices is God.

Personally, I am totally and completely anti-abortion. I believe that abortion is murder. It is a sin! If a woman came to me for advice on this issue, I would tell her without a doubt “don’t do it!” If God saw fit to allow that child to be conceived, regardless of the circumstances of that conception, then that child has a purpose in this world and no one should destroy what God has created. Anyone who does so will answer to God.

So, how can I also be pro-choice? Because, just as I stated in my article on Gay Marriage, I believe that God gave every one of us the right to accept or reject both Him and His laws. We were all given free will. It breaks God’s heart every time someone chooses to reject Him but He still gives them the right to do it. If God is willing to give each one of us the right to choose, I can do no less. That doesn’t mean I can’t do everything in my power to make people see that abortion is wrong. It just means that when it comes down to making the final decision, the choice belongs to each individual. I can’t force someone to make the moral choice anymore than I can force someone to accept Christ, no matter how much it hurts to see them lost. Christ loves everyone, even the worst of the sinners. He told every one of us to do the same and that’s what I choose to do. I don’t agree with people who get abortions, but I pray for them and their circumstances. They need love, not condemnation.

One of the statements I like best in the article is his response when questioned about whether or not he supports Kerry. The politician stated that “he examines the views of each individual candidate and does not vote strictly on party lines.” I wish more people would do that. Politics today seem to revolve more around a competition between Democrats and Republicans than an actual concern with who might do the best job of running this country. This is not a game of tug-of-war. Lives are at stake. The future of this country and it’s people are at stake. THAT is what people should be focused on. Who cares what party they’re from?
