Marshmallow Bust Haunts Woman On Cruise

The article linked above is about a young teacher’s aide who, upon returning from a Mexican cruise, was pulled from her bed by federal agents at 6:30 a.m. , handcuffed, placed in leg shackles, held for nine hours, and finally dragged before a judge. With such a dramatic arrest, you’d think she was wanted for a major crime, wouldn’t you? Was she wanted for murder? Drug smuggling? Terrorist activity? No. The serious crime she committed was to accidently leave her marshmallows and hot chocolate out while vacationing in Yellowstone Park the previous year.

Yellowstone Park has strict rules about food storage to prevent the animals from consuming human food. Failure to follow these rules results in a $50 fine, a fine the teacher’s aide responsibly paid prior to leaving the park. Unfortunately, an apparent paperwork error resulted in her payment not being recorded properly. Even though a copy of the citation clearly showed the fine HAD been paid, the discrepency in the record prompted the Assistant U.S. Attorney to issue a warrant, which led to the frightening, not to mention humiliating, public early morning arrest.

Isn’t it nice to know that with all the murderers, drug runners, and terrorists out there, our government agents are still taking the time and effort to crack down on the SERIOUS crimes? We can feel secure knowing no irresponsible marshmallow users are running loose out there. I feel so safe now, don’t you?
